Why Minimizing Words Could Be Hurting Your Patients' Outcomes

Why Minimizing Words Could Be Hurting Your Patients' Outcomes

In healthcare, every word you say carries weight. From reviewing an X-ray to recommending treatment, your language influences how patients understand and act on their health. Are you unintentionally downplaying the seriousness of what you see?

Let’s dive into a lesson inspired by Natasha Saavedra of MedPro Dojo that encourages us to stop using minimizing language when presenting findings to patients.

The Danger of “Just a Little Bit”

Imagine this: A patient sits across from you as you review their X-rays. You notice degenerative changes or disc narrowing, but instead of addressing these findings with authority, you say, "It’s just a little bit of degeneration," or "The discs have narrowed slightly."

Seems harmless, right? Think again. Would you take it lightly if your doctor said, “There’s just a little bit of cancer here”? Likely, you’d be alarmed and want to act immediately. The same goes for patients when they hear about their health. Minimizing language inadvertently gives them permission to ignore the issue, delaying necessary treatment.

Why Minimizing Words Could Be Hurting Your Patients' Outcomes

Drawing Parallels: Why Words Matter

Let’s relate this to another field. If a dentist said, “It’s just a little cavity; let’s leave it and see what happens,” you might leave confused or, worse, dismiss the issue. However, if left untreated, a small cavity could lead to severe problems, like a root canal or extraction. Degenerative spine changes work the same way. Left unaddressed, they worsen and can cause nerve issues, impaired healing, and disease.

By using minimizing language, patients might delay action, pushing them closer to a health crisis.

Education Empowers Action

Your job as a healthcare provider is to educate, not scare. Patients can’t make informed decisions if they don’t understand the gravity of their condition. But how do you maintain authority while showing compassion?

Here’s how to balance that in your conversations:

  1. Start with Normal: Show what a healthy spine looks like, using visuals of proper curves, equal disc spacing, and healthy joints.

  2. Show the Changes: Walk through their X-rays with them and ask questions like, "What do you notice in phase one versus phase two?" Highlight abnormalities like disc narrowing or bone spurs.

  3. Connect the Dots: Explain how degeneration can reduce function and how early intervention prevents long-term damage.

By educating patients this way, you empower them to take action without resorting to scare tactics.

Stop Minimizing, Start Leading

Patients often minimize their own health concerns, hoping the issue will resolve. As healthcare professionals, it’s our job to break this cycle and get them to take action.

Remember: People won’t act until they truly understand the weight of the situation. And this weight comes from the way we present the information.

Avoid phrases like "It’s just a little…” or “This is slightly off…” Instead, say, “Here’s what we’re seeing, and here’s what it means for your body’s healing and function.”

By reframing their understanding, you focus on the long-term impact of inaction, helping them prioritize their health.

A Call to Action for Healthcare Leaders

As Natasha Saavedra wisely stated, “Stay away from minimizing words. Say what you see as it is.”

Your words can either inspire change or enable complacency. Choose your words wisely, educate with authority, and remember that the best outcomes start with clear, honest communication.

Let’s create a new standard where patients feel informed, empowered, and ready to take charge of their health.

Be blessed, and be a blessing.
